The Effects of Mother’s Parenting Efficacy on Young Children’s Emotion Regulation: The Mediating Effects of Mother’s Emotional Expressiveness and Reactions to Children’s Negative Emotions

|
The purpose of this study is to verify the mediating effects of mother’s emotional expressiveness and reactions to children’s negative emotions between mother’s parenting efficacy and young children’s emotion regulation. The participants of this study were 269 mothers with their children aged from 3 to 5 years old were surveyed through an online questionnaire. The main results of this study were as follows. First, the partial mediating effects of mother’s positive and negative emotional expressiveness were found in the relationship between mother’s parenting efficacy and children’s emotion regulation. Second, it has been observed that mother’s positive, negative emotional expressiveness and mother’s non-supportive reactions to children’s negative emotions have sequential dual mediation effects on the relationship between mother’s parenting efficacy and children’s emotion regulation. This study is meaningful in that it has been confirmed that the parents’ beliefs, the role of modeling of emotional expression, and the parenting behavior have important effects on the children’s emotion regulation. Finally, the limitations of the study were examined and suggestions for further research were discussed.
